An Extraordinary Embroidery Journey: A commissioned embroidery for Artist / Sculptor Brett Graham

At Pro Look, we specialize in manufacturing promotional uniforms and delivering high-quality embroidery for businesses throughout New Zealand. With 25 years of embroidery expertise, we’re used to creating impactful branded apparel—but every so often, a project comes along that challenges us to step into the world of art. This was one of those rare opportunities, and we’re thrilled to share the experience with you.
It was a true honor to be approached by the talented Lilo, who was working on a textile piece commissioned by renowned artist Brett Graham. This wasn’t your typical embroidery job—it was a massive tapestry, large enough to cover the floor of Waiuku Town Hall, and it took us nearly a month to complete.
The piece featured striking embroidered letters and an appliqué taniwha, layered over beautiful exotic fabric. Designed with a tone-on-tone aesthetic, the work allowed the textile weaves and textures to shine, using light, reflection, and perspective to bring the design to life in a truly unique way.
The final artwork was exhibited at the Auckland Art Gallery last year, where it left a lasting impression on visitors. We’ve been so busy with our day-to-day work—crafting promotional uniforms and embroidery for our clients—that we’re only sharing this now.
Interestingly, this project came at a serendipitous time, as I had recently been inspired by the incredible textile art exhibition at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery/Len Lye Centre. The work of those amazing artists fueled my passion for this collaboration, making it even more meaningful.
